PART 23: Lonely Lonely Heart

        "Goten…"
He jerked around when he heard someone call his name.
"Marron!  Wh-what are you doing here?" He wiped his tears away quickly.
"Oh, Goten," she said and walked closer to him. "I…"
Goten's eyes widened as he saw tears roll down her cheeks. "I am so sorry," she sobbed, covering her mouth when the sobs got too loud.  "I didn't know this was going to happen…this wasn't supposed to happen!  I…"
        "Marron, it's okay…"
She looked up at him. "It's not okay, Goten," she cried and wrapped her arms around him.  At first, he was a bit shocked, but then he realized she was just trying to comfort him.  He attempted a smile for her.
"Hey, Marron, it's gonna be okay."
Just then, Trunks came forwards.  He smiled at his friend.
"Hey," Goten said, pulling away from Marron. "How did you guys know that?"
"We--we were behind the bushes, Goten," Marron explained. "We thought we could witness the happiest day in your life…"
Goten stared at their serious faces. "You guys…spied on me?"
        "Well, yes," Trunks admitted.
"I should be mad, but…thanks guys, for being here." He punched Trunks' shoulder lightly and gave Marron a quick hug.
"We should go…" Marron said. "I'm freezing." She shivered.
        "Okay, let's," Trunks agreed.
"Uh, guys?" They turned to look at him.
"Please, don't tell anyone about this, okay?  Please?"
"Sure." Marron smiled at him. "Don't worry about it."
"Cheer up, Goten!" Trunks said. "There're still plenty of other fish in the sea!"
"Um…sure." Goten nodded. "That's not much comfort, but thanks, I guess." He tried to laugh.
        "What did you say?"
"Okay, Trunks, let's go." Marron pulled on his wet jacket.
So they left first, Goten trailing slightly behind.  He smiled to himself.  It was nice he had real friends like this, real friends he could rely on.
It would just be perfect if there was someone who could heal his broken heart and make him whole again.
He wondered…

***********************************
Bra stared at the pouring rain outside her bedroom window.  It was one cold evening.  She could see people rushing here and there, trying to evade the heavy rain.  Bra sighed.  She rested her head on her big teddy as she watched thousands and thousands and thousands of raindrops flowing down her window.  Flowing like tears.
Since yesterday, since the shocking news, Bra had avoided everyone, including her best friends and family.  She just wanted to be alone.  Maybe after she got over this…this thing that only Marron seemed to understand she would be able to face them.  But not until then.  She wanted to tell Trunks so badly, but she's too scared…if he couldn't handle it, he'd tell their mother, who'd tell their father and then…
She squeezed her eyes shut.  Definitely too risky.
I'm so stupid, she thought. Why'd I get a crush on him in first place?  He's not the only guy on Chikyuu…there has to be a better guy than HIM out there somewhere…
Face it, Bra, he's just too old for you.
        "No, he's not, he's NOT…our ages don't matter…" She told her reflection.
So what are you gonna do now?  Are you gonna tell him you love him?  Even though he's getting married?  Do you think he'd WANT you?  Do you think your family would agree with you?  Is that the right thing to do?  Why do you choose him?  Why?  Do you even know if he sees anything in you?  You're like a sister to him, if that.  Why confess, Bra?  Why embarrass yourself and him?  It's pointless.  Just like being in love with him.
She hugged her teddy tighter and began crying again, looking at her reflection, knowing every word she had just thought was true, and seeing the raindrops mix with her tears, as if her otherself was crying.  And she was.
"It…it was just a feeling," she whispered. "Just my feeling…"

        And she burst into tears.
***********************************
Bra walked slowly towards the kitchen for breakfast the next morning.  She was awfully hungry because she
hadn't come down for dinner the previous night.  Bulma was at the stove preparing the meal, as usual.
She was expecting some announcement, like, "GOTEN IS GETTING MARRIED TOMORROW!" or something like that, but the only news she got was that Trunks was sick in his room with a bad cold.
"He came home soaking wet and won't tell me where he was!" Bulma complained.
Bra's eyes widened.  So there WAS something she should know about.

***********************************
        "AAACCHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
        Third box of Kleenex, empty.
        "Stupid cold, I will never…ah…Ahhh…AAAHHH-CHOO!"
****
Marron sniffed and wrapped himself with another thick blanket. "Ugh…" she groaned.
"Are you sure you're okay, honey?  You don't sound good…" Krillin said over the phone.
        "I'm okay, Tousan…just a light headache and…ah…achoo!"
"AND a terrible cold!" Krillin added. "Where were you yesterday?"
"Nowhere…maybe I'm allergic to my neighbor's cat…besides it sounds worse that it is…"
Krillin ignored that. "Marron, you were never allergic to cats before."
Marron stayed quiet, trying to think of some more excuses.
